Perched at the foothills of the majestic Mt. Banahaw and Mt. Cristobal lies Nagcarlan, Laguna, home to the vibrant Ana Kalang Festival. This lively celebration, spanning five days in April each year, is a tribute to the bountiful harvest of the town’s agro-industrial treasures, including staples like rice, coconuts, and the renowned lanzones fruit.
The festival takes its name from the legendary tribal leader, Ana Kalang, whose tales of immense wealth, benevolence, and devotion to her community are woven into the fabric of Nagcarlan’s history. Legends recount Ana Kalang’s extraordinary kindness and generosity, often coming to the aid of her fellow townspeople in times of need.
One popular legend traces the origin of the town’s name, Nagcarlan, to an encounter between Ana Kalang and a Spanish visitor. Observing branches swaying outside her home, the visitor inquired about the commotion. Ana Kalang, explaining in her native tongue, said the branches were “nagkakalang sila,” meaning they were swaying against each other. The Spaniards adopted this phrase as the town’s name. Another folklore speaks of Ana Kalang’s divine encounter with the Virgin Sta. Ana, who miraculously purified lanzones fruits, transforming them into one of the province’s principal exports.
The Ana Kalang Festival offers visitors a captivating journey into Nagcarlan’s heritage, blending myth, history, and cultural significance. Through colorful festivities, traditional performances, and culinary delights, the festival honors the spirit of Ana Kalang and celebrates the enduring legacy of prosperity and community that defines the town. It’s a testament to the rich tapestry of traditions and the resilience of the people of Nagcarlan.
