Siniloan’s Gilingan Festival is a vibrant and meaningful celebration that serves as a living tribute to the town’s rich history, cultural heritage, and the industrious spirit of its people. This annual event takes place on the last Friday of August and marks a significant moment in the town’s history, commemorating its foundation day, which dates back to 1583 when Spanish colonizers first established Siniloan as a town.

Originally named “Guiling-Guiling,” the town’s name is steeped in history and tradition. The name is believed to have been derived from the “gilingang bato,” or grindstones, that local women used to grind rice. These grindstones were a common sight in the fields as the Spanish passed through, and the rhythmic motion of grinding rice left a lasting impression on them, leading to the name “Guiling-Guiling.” Over time, the name evolved to become Siniloan, but the connection to the grindstone remains a central part of the town’s identity.
The Gilingan Festival not only honors this unique historical anecdote but also celebrates the town’s enduring connection to traditional practices and its agricultural roots. The grindstone, or “gilingan,” symbolizes the resilience, hard work, and unity of the community. These qualities are proudly displayed during the festival, where various events and activities highlight the town’s cultural legacy.
One of the key highlights of the Gilingan Festival is the street parade, where participants don traditional attire and showcase floats decorated with motifs representing the gilingang bato and the agricultural abundance of the region.
